The Story

Trunkettes was the brainchild of Hilary Genga, a mom entrepreneur in search of a trendy bathing suit that provided more freedom and comfort than traditional swimwear. Her story from initial startup idea to running a business and creating fashionable suits that are not only comfortable and confidence building but glamorous to boot, is an inspiration to all women and the business community as whole.

Hilary had been wearing her husband’s swim trunks for years, matched up with cute bikini tops.  She was much more comfortable at the beach and the pool wearing trunks than a traditional women's swimsuit.  It looked super cute and she could be as active as she wanted (especially running after her kids) without worrying about a wardrobe malfunction.  Still, she wanted something a little more feminine and made for a woman's body.  After looking for years in department stores and never finding what she wanted, Hilary decided to create them herself.

She went to her friend Kristen Greven who had recently graduated fashion school. Kristen immediately made sketches and then some prototypes, and the business was off and running. Some great publicity early on really opened up a lot of doors for Trunkettes. Hilary loves that she hears from women all the time praising her product, and loves that she is doing her part to promote women in business.

Trunkettes Swimwear has been featured on The TODAY Show, The Talk, Entertainment Tonight, Extra, as well as in US Weekly, The Huffington Post, HuffPost Celebrity, Business News Daily, Celebrity Style Guide, Coolspotters, InTouch, The Chicago Tribune, Glamour, The New York Post, Newsday, The Tampa Tribune, Style, OceanDrive and Genlux, among other notable press outlets. Hilary was also mentored by Daymond John of ABC’s Shark Tank and found his advice enormously valuable as a business owner starting with nothing.

Trunkettes Swimwear has also been included in the coveted Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition six times, beating out upwards of 10,000 submissions each time to make it in the ultimate placement for premiering the season’s new swimwear. She applauded Sports Illustrated for featuring size 14 models this year saying, “Empowering women with choices, feeling beautiful and finding your own self-confidence is what the Trunkettes brand is all about. We love the choice of acceptance SI has made in featuring more realistic models this year and hope that it marks a move in this direction for the industry.”

An impressive list of celebrities wearing Trunkettes have popularized the brand, including Carrie Underwood, Carmen Electra, Felicity Huffman, Kathy Lee Gifford, Perrey Reeves, Julie Bowen, Hannah Davis, Gretchen Rossi, and the lovely ladies on The Talk. The diverse Trunkettes clientele represents the variety of styles offered- from a full range of alternative swim trunks for women to string bikinis and cover-ups.

Hilary grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She attended USC's prestigious theatre school, where she honed her creative skills as well as her business skills.  She started a nonprofit production company, where she produced many successful original plays and musicals. After getting married and having two children, she decided she wanted to use her entrepreneurial skills to start a successful business, and help secure her children's future. She also loved the idea of a business focused on women run by women.

Hilary lives in LA with her husband and two kids. The Southern California Business Journals recently honored Hilary as Women In Business CEO of The Year.

Kristen has been Co-Owner and Design Director for Trunkettes swimwear since the company was founded by Hilary Genga in 2008. Growing up in an exceptionally artistic family, she was inspired by many forms of art at a very young age.

Kristen attended The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and received a degree in Fashion Design and an advanced degree in Film and Television Costume Design. Since receiving her degrees, she has worked as a Wardrobe Stylist and Costume Designer on multiple movies and television shows. Her wardrobe team on CBS’s The Talk was recently nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award.

Kristen finds loads of inspiration from her various travels around the world.  She loves to scour antique flea and textile markets for the best new treasures, and also loves studying foreign architecture. Being involved with Trunkettes has given her a new sense of self-gratitude because she knows she is empowering other women.

Winter in the Tropics

Would you rather go to Hawaii or the Caribbean?  After what felt like a never-ending winter in some parts of the country last year, everyone who likes to travel is dreaming of a tropical getaway as this winter season quickly approaches.  Maybe you are loading the family in the car or perhaps you are flying off to that exotic destination you've always dreamed of.  After you decide where to go, and if you should invite your family, the next big question to arise is what you will wear.  Let the packing begin!

Shorts, dresses… and most importantly, which bathing suits will you take? Last year’s one-piece is getting stretched out in funny places… What about the faded one you’ve loved for years? Should you toss in that bikini you will probably need a cover up for?   Chances are that for this winter holiday you definitely deserve a new bathing suit in your stocking!  The prettiest shoes and purses in the world simply cannot compete with a new two-piece that makes you feel gorgeous and sexy.  There’s nothing quite like finding something you can wear to the beach or pool that emphasizes those fantastic curves and covers the spots you don’t feel like showing off right now. So many women who like to swim won’t go in the water because they don’t want to swim in their shorts, but walking toward the water without the shorts doesn’t appeal either.  Well, the designers at Trunkettes know that story well, and they are here to help!  Nobody needs to feel self-conscious on vacation!! There are beautiful colors and patterns to fit your taste and a choice of styles that will fit you better and make you feel more confident in your mermaid pose than you have in years. Every bathing suit top has a coordinating pair of shorts that can be worn as bathing suit bottoms too!  The shorts come in a variety of fits and styles so that no matter your body type, there is something that will look great on YOU.  There is also a new one-piece style called ‘The Trixie’ that hugs and wraps you in shape-wear fashion.  The Trixie has an open bust and can be worn with a variety of coordinating tops in any color and size you like.  When you find your style that best fits with your beautiful and unique body, you’ll know you are ready to show it off on that beach you’ve been dreaming about.  Who knows? It may completely change your idea of fun in the sun.

Whether you’re packing up the car and driving to the nearest beach or you’re off to meet your yacht in the Greek Isles, Trunkettes has you covered. We want you to feel confident, sexy, and look your best when you get to that vacation destination you’ve been waiting to explore while you get re-acquainted with that old flame, Mr. Sun.

Thankful for Trunkettes

Thanksgiving is here! November definitely snuck up this year.  Plans for hosting or for sitting in traffic to go visit extended family have been finalized.  The menu is planned but for some reason the grocery list and packing list keeps growing.  The sweatpants with loose elastic should definitely be on the packing list for after the big meal.  Will you be packing a bathing suit?  That may not seem like a top priority item for most people at Thanksgiving, but for us it is.

Thanksgiving is all about traditions.  One of the best traditions is spending some time thinking about the things you are most thankful for.  It’s a common tradition to spend it with your favorite people or with people you are related to – and lucky you if those categories align!   Some people play football and others spend the weekend discussing politics or decorating for the next holiday.  My family has a relatively new tradition of spending Thanksgiving in Grandma’s fancy retirement community in Arizona.  Among the amazing amenities you can travel to via golf cart, there are several huge, beautiful, and HEATED swimming pools.  Therefore, packing swimwear is a MUST for us.  Spending the weekend poolside after stuffing ourselves with stuffing is always a daunting idea.  However, there are two redeeming aspects: The first is that this is far better than shoveling snow and the second is that Trunkettes will be there for moral support.

Trunkettes has plenty of cute little bikinis in fun colors if you are planning to spend time at the beach or by the pool and feel confident in your lovely skin.  And, if you are coming from a large meal with mashed potatoes, gravy, buttered rolls, or pie there are also options in dark slimming colors with cute shorts or kimono cover-ups to match.  In the unlikely event that restraint will be shown when it comes to those temptations, the Trixie will be an excellent choice.  It has yet to be tested on what I will tenderly refer to as the ‘Turkey Tummy’ but I believe it is up for the task.  It is incredibly sleek and slimming and will surely be ready for the challenge.  And for those who prefer to have a little more covered, there are several styles of cute shorts.  For the day or two after a notoriously huge meal, the shorts that cover the larger-than-usual hips and tummy pooch are definitely the best way to go.  Wherever you may be this Thanksgiving season, we wish you safe travels, good weather, enjoyable company, and large helpings of your favorite foods. Happy Eating!

Love of Travel

Do you LOVE to travel?! Do you plan to go on a search to find a warmer climate this winter? Maybe this next trip will be a chance to reconnect with your man or to find new ways to enjoy some quality time with your family.  Either way, chances are that it’s MUCH needed time just to be AWAY.  Experiencing new things, revisiting old favorites, and making new memories… those are the things that make life truly wonderful.  So you’ll probably need a new bathing suit that is as fun and sexy and adventurous as you are for that trip to be everything you’ve been looking forward to.

Now that airfare and cruises to tropical destinations are becoming more affordable, it seems like everyone we talk to is planning some amazing exotic trip.  Fiji, Thailand, Tahiti, Hawaii, Turks and Caicos… and all of them require swimwear!  Soon it will be time to put aside the pants and shave those legs, ladies.  Even the people going to a ski lodge are probably going to have a hot tub!  So now that we’ve added a razor to the packing list, let’s talk style.  Do you need a sexy bikini that can be untied easily under a secluded waterfall, or are you feeling like the more that stays covered the better? No matter what your preference is, you need something that feels good and looks good on Y-O-U.  Confidence is everything.  If you are an adventure seeker you probably want a pair of shorts that can go for a hike, stay on securely while you swim under that waterfall, and dry quickly on the hike back.  Trunkettes has those! No matter what your ideas of fun and relaxation are, there is a cute and comfortable option that will fit your sense of adventure and be the perfect style to show off those legs!

Maybe after trips in the past there have been bathing suit photos you’d rather have hidden or deleted completely, but this year photos of you in your Trunkettes swimwear are sure to be included in the highlight reel.  The confidence you feel in your sexy new Trunks or Trixie will be one of your top favorite vacation memories forever!  Check out the gorgeous Aqua Lace print that comes in every style you can think of so you can mix and match!  Whatever combination you choose, feel free to tag a photo of you in your new #Trunkettes. Whether you’re in some far flung location or your own back yard, we love hearing from you!  Travel well, friends!

Is it Summer or Fall?

Is it Summer or Fall?

Aahhhh….. Watching the waves crashing against the shoreline in front of you and feeling the water rushing around your ankles is one of the best feelings of life.  Playing in the shallow water in your Trixie bathing suit that makes you feel skinny even though you forgot about your diet last week is FREEDOM.

Summer has been extended!! It has certainly gone on far beyond what anyone in California expected or could have hoped for.  Every year we hear residents of the beach towns on the coast refer to the weeks after Labor Day as “Local’s summer”.  They are talking about that magical little window of late September and early October when the water is the warmest and the beaches are virtually empty after most have gone back to school and work.  Travel agents call it “Shoulder Season”.  California may be known for the sunshine, but we are on a whole new playing field this year.  The first day of autumn was several weeks ago and towns along the coast of Southern California are still breaking new heat wave records in OCTOBER.  People in areas which are consistently 74 degrees are confused by the triple digit temperatures.  Many have forgotten how to use a thermostat or don’t have air-conditioning at all.  It’s CRAZY!

We may be melting, but let’s not panic! In fact, let’s all put on our new Trunkettes and head to the beach! The water is still warm and certainly more refreshing than sitting in our hot homes.  If the sand is too warm, the water is the place to be!  So grab your Trixie or your Daisy Trunks and get out into the sea breeze!  Just standing at the vast edge of the ocean can be so therapeutic.  If you are stuck inside during the days, go watch the sunset after work.  Pretty soon it will be setting while you still have another hour at the office.  So far this Fall Season hasn’t had very much of the crisp cool air and fuzzy sweater weather, but it certainly has the amazing sunsets! Luckily, Trunkettes still has plenty of pretty bathing suits with matching trunks or cover-ups to keep you living free by the ocean or swimming pool for as long as the warm weather will last.  Once fall turns to what might become a long El Nino winter, you might miss the very warm sunny days, so live it up!

If you are already planning your winter holiday, check out all the awesome collections of styles you can show off on your vacation. There is definitely something for everybody!

Trunkettes Swimwear Shapes Up Swimsuit Industry with The Trixie

Stylish Lines Provide Poolside Comfort and Confidence for Women of All Shapes & Sizes
March 31, 2015

LOS ANGELES--()--Trunkettes Swimwear is debuting their newest swimsuit, The Trixie, a revolutionary new look for the swimsuit industry that provides both undeniable slimming appeal on curvier women and enhanced curves on slender women. The Trixie is part of the new Trunkettes Summer Collection, available online April 1, 2015.

Celebrated for being the first company to offer a complete line of women's swim trunks, created to be hip and sexy but with a bit more coverage, Trunkettes believes the new Trixie swimsuit will be a hit with moms and active women who want to look and feel good by the pool, without accidental wardrobe malfunctions. The design is modeled after shapewear but it’s not your typical grandmotherly style shapewear swimsuit. This entirely new look is stylish with comfort and coverage rarely achieved in swimwear.

The Trixie is truly flattering on every body type and shows off curves in all the right places,” states Hilary Genga, founder and CEO of Trunkettes Swimwear. “It brings out the best in everyone and is extremely comfortable with full back coverage and a selection of colorful bandeau tops to choose from.” The unique swimsuit looks as though it’s a one-piece but it is actually a two-piece set, offering mix-and-match options for custom ordering.

Becoming known as #TheOtherHilary fighting for women’s rights, Genga founded the Trunkettes line of confidence building swimsuits when she realized that she wasn’t alone as a mom seeking swimwear that would allow her to feel comfortable and stylish playing with her kids in the water. “Pooltime is not just for dads,” she has often said. “I want women to know the joy of splashing and playing with their children, rather than sitting covered-up on the sidelines. As moms, we take on so many day-to-day responsibilities and it’s time to take on the role of having more fun with our kids!”

Trunkettes Swimwear has been featured six times in the coveted Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. A long list of celebrities wearing Trunkettes have also popularized the brand including Carrie Underwood, Carmen Electra, Felicity Huffman, Kathy Lee Gifford, Perrey Reeves, Julie Bowen, Hannah Davis, Gretchen Rossi, and the lovely ladies on The Talk.

Trunkettes was the brainchild of Hilary Genga, a mom entrepreneur who lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two kids. After realizing the need for trendier swimsuit options that provided a little more coverage, she consulted designer Kristen Greven who ran with the idea and together they created a unique line of swimsuits that are not only comfortable and confidence building but glamorous to boot. The Trunkettes line features a versatile array of swim trunks for women, sexy bikinis and cover-ups. To order online, visit www.trunkettes.com.
